Behind the Headlines/september 10

Jamshid Chalangi:

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines:

The Iranian regime has attacked the Iranian Kurdish positions in Iraqi Kurdistan by a missile strike and as many as 15 people from the top ranks of the leadership of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (DPIK) have been killed and 50 more badly injured.

Over the weekend, the regime also executed three Iranian Kurdish prisoners, Ramin Hossein Panahi and Zaniyar and Loqman Moradi, who had been jailed for many years.

We discuss these developments with our guests Shahou Hosseini of the DPIK and the Paris-based political commentator Iraj Mesdaghi to find out what is the objective of the Iranian regime from this onslaught on our Iranian Kurds.

Shahou Hosseini:

The recent executions, ad in fact all the executions that have been carried outunder this regime are an indication that the regime is scared of its own survival.

The regime is extremely worried about the external and internal pressure that it has come under, especially since the burst of recent uprisings across the country and by executing people it is trying to scare the people to back off from opposing it.

The Revolutionary Guard in particular are trying to stage a show of strength to say that they can carry out any reprisal action as they wish and the regime is strong enough in face of all the challenges that threaten its existence.

Iraj Mesdaghi:

What is really happening in Iran today is the continuation of what happened one day after the establishment of the Islamic republic regime 40 years ago.

This regime came to power with violation of human rights of Iranian people and executing its opponents and has since made this approach as the means of sustaining its rule.

However, the difference between then and now is that if 40 years ago it carried out all its atrocities in the name of the revolution and enjoyed some support from the public and political groups, but today it faces nationwide opposition to its rule and carries these violations in fear of losing its power.

In the case of the three executed young Iranian Kurds, the evidence points to their innocence but the regime just wanted to execute them to “teach a lesson to others” not to challenge its authority.

As for the shelling of the DPIK headquarters and killing many of its leaders, it has come immediately after the meeting between Rouhani with Turkey’s Erdogan and Russia’s Putin, which indicate that they have given their go ahead to the operation.

The Kurdish freedom fighters have always been a source of inspirations to all Iranian democratic forces and by focusing its suppression on them the regime seeks to deter others to challenge it.
