In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines we will look at the consequences of the US sanctions on the Iranian people’s economic conditions, as well as the current affairs of the region.
We will also look at the recent visit of Benyamin Netanyahu to Oman and his meeting with Sultan Qaboos that has been followed by a meeting between Qaboos and Iran’s ambassador to Oman Mohammad Reza Nouri Shahroudi.
Our guests tonight to discuss these topics are Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh and Mr. Hassan Shariatmadari.
Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:
Rouhani had given very many unfounded promises during the election time as he was facing Ebrahim Raisee as his main rival. He knew that the regime was behind promoting Raisee to become the next supreme leader and as such wanted to discredit him during the debates.
But as soon as he won the election Khamenei paralyzed him and his cabinet by telling him who should be his ministers for the key ministries.
For long Rouhani had put all his hopes on the Europeans to support his administration and begin to invest in Iran but they were dashed with the arrival of Trump in the White House.
Now the regime is so desperate that it send its terrorists to Europe to kill Mr Jaber in Denmark and Rouhani thinks that when Khamenei dies he will become the next supreme leader, ignoring the fact that the Iranian people have buried the notion of supreme leader.
Rouhani has not even had the power to release the leaders of the Green Movement from house arrest and has been indifferent to the killing and imprisonment of Iranian environmentalists.
He has simply lost the plot and is nothing more than a completely failed politician.
Hassan Shariatmadari:
In the Islamic republic regime presidents are nothing more than a subordinate of Khamenei and act as a buffer zone to deflect criticisms of him.
Behind the scene the regime directs all the condemnations that are targeted against Khamenei to be relayed towards Rouhani.
In reality the regime is an organized chaos that lives by the day and plays like an acrobat that can fall off the rope any time.
It is a puzzle how Rouhani can think of becoming a supreme leader under the current conditions.
