Behind the Headlines/Nov 10

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines from our London studios we will look at the demands of Iranian teachers that have not yet been met by the government, as Hashem Khastar, one of their union leaders has now been released from detention.

Iran’s prisons are now packed with many people like Khastar who have been protesting against the regime’s policies and violations of human rights of the Iranian people.

Narges Mohammadi, Nasrin Sotoudeh, Arjang Davoodi and Athena Daemi are just a few of them.

Now the regime has accused our environmentalists of working for foreign spy agencies and this could lead to death penalty for them.

Reports also say that more than 22 young people have been executed in Ahwaz on charges of having been involved in last month’s attack on a military parade in the city.

With all these shocking news about the state of human rights in Iran, we speak to our guest Dr. Hassan Nayeb Hashem to get his expert views about them.

Dr. Hassan Nayeb Hashem:

In many democratic and semi democratic countries of the world where the rule of law is dominant, their justice system works independently of the whims of the rulers of those countries.

The Islamic republic regime is among the 23 countries of the world whose justice system is tied up to the undemocratic rulers and as such carries out death penalty even in public and against under age young people.

It appears that they have now carried out a mass execution in Ahwaz last week and all communications with the prisons in the city have been cut off.

The executed people have had nothing to do with last month’s attack on the military parade and have been civil rights activists.

It is certain that their executions are illegal and unlawful and such sentences will take years to be carried out in democratic countries and in many casesthey are reversed or commuted.

We expect the international community to condemn it and stop any further such travesty of justice.
