Jamshid Chalangi:
In tonight’s edition of Behind the Headlines we will ask our guests Hassan Etemadi and Mohammadreza Haydari to share their views about the US Secretary of State’s speech on Iran and find out if the US is after the change of regime in Iran and that if the Iranian people have any hope that the current regime can be reformed at all?
Hassan Etemadi:
Mr. Pompeo’s demands from the Iranian regime are exactly the same demands of the Iranian people as well as the European and neighboring countries of Iran. The conditions put forward by the US seek to secure security and stability for the region and if the Islamic republic regime accepts them a new era of relations between Iran and the US will begin and the Americans will help Iran to rebuild its devastated economy and revive its markets.
If we ignore these points and bypass them for any reason, we would have made an historic error of judgment. That means, if there were only couple of wise people within this regime they would accept these conditions and would work to convince the rest of them that this is the best way forward for the future of Iran and the Iranians.
Mohammadreza Haydari:
The Islamic republic regime has had several different opportunities to become an active member of the international community and play a constructive and major role in shaping the future of the region.
However, it has always tried to follow its policy of “exporting its revolution” which is nothing but to create crisis and instability in the region just to pretend that it has the final say on the issues of the Middle East.
Even now, you can see their reaction to the US conditions in Zarif’s comments. He has said Mike Pompeo “suffers from illusion”.
Zarif’s position reflects Khamenei’s stance who wants to grow Iran’s dependency on China and Russia and the Europeans through maintaining the nuclear deal with them and buy time, and hoping that may be something will happen to Trump’s administration or in the next US elections the Democrats will have the upper hand.
That is why they will not take Pompeo’s conditions seriously and are just after buying time and in the meantime the Iranian people must suffer from this foolish policy.
Hassan Etemadi:
We only wish there were only a handful of wise people within this regime for the last forty years.
Its president, Hassan Rouhani, has said that Pompeo has been a spy. This kind of talk from the head of a state towards the foreign minister of another country shows how this regime lacks any rationality or sense of statesmanship. The insanity of the leaders of this regime is what threatens Iran with war, not a US policy.
Mohammadreza Haydari:
We must not forget that still under this regime Khamenei has the final say about everything. All those thugs who attack foreign embassies are connected to Khamenei’s household.
Basically, the interests of this regime run in complete opposite direction to those of the Iranian people.
It only understands the language of force and the moment that they feel their existence is in danger they will surrender and deny they ever had anything to do with the calamities that they have brought onto Iran and the Iranians.
