Behind the Headlines/June 22, 2018

Jamshid Chalangi:

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines we ask our guests Alireza Nourizadeh and Hassan Shariatmadari if the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s conditions put forward to the Iranian regime will be accepted and the regime will consequently change its behaviour.

We also look at the latest news of OPEC’s meeting where Russia and Saudi Arabia are in favor of increasing the organization’s daily output of oil.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

Iran’s oil minister Mr. Zanganeh is very worried because in the past Iran was the second largest oil producer within OPEC after Saudi Arabia. But nowadays, even Iraq has a larger share of the quotas than us.

Iran needs more than 200 billion dollars of foreign investment to modernize its oil industries but the ruling regime’s policies has taken the country to the brink and experts say soon we will not be able to produce more than a million barrels a day and once the new US sanctions come to effect only God knows how our people will be able to feed themselves.

Hassan Shariatmadari:

For years the regime has been shouting slogans about its independence but they think being isolated from the rest of the international community means your country is independent.

Not only our oil industries, but also all aspects of Iran’s economy are now dependent on international factors and changes, without us having the least influence in shaping any one of them.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

Iran had signed a deal with the Emirate’s leaders over gas explorations but when Ahmadinejad came to power had had demanded a $100m bribe from Crescent, the company that had signed the contract, and when they did not pay it the deal was annulled.

The UAE government took Iran to the international court in The Hague and we were found guilty of breaching the contract and had to pay $18 billion of compensations!

Hassan Shariatmadari:

In Islam three things are considered as the worst sins that a Muslim can do; to shed another Muslim’s blood; to steal another Muslim’s money or property and to violate a Muslim’s human rights.

The Islamic republic regime of Iran has committed these sins, or better said crimes, since its inception non-stop, simply because they are not believers, they are just power hungry.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

If the Islamic republic regime accepts Pompeo’s conditions there will be Islamic republic no more.

Mr. Zarif has now replied to Mr. Pompeo’s conditions with his own set of conditions, which are more of slogans, and no one will buy them in the US government.
