Behind the Headlines/June 19, 2018

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines:

Mohammad Salas, the Gonabdi dervish, is executed; what next?

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemns Salas’s execution;

How true is the claim by Iranian regime’s officials that if the regime is overthrown Iran will become a “second Syria”?

Are the Iranian people not capable of establishing a system of governance that can protect their national interests?

Our guests tonight to discuss these topics are Allahyar Kangarlou and Mohammad Sadigh Yazdchi.

Jamshid Chalangi:

Bahram Ghassemi, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has responded to Mr. Pompeo’s remarks about Salas by saying that his execution is an internal matter for Iran and US has no right to condemn it. Is it really the case?

Allahyar Kangarlou:

Not really. This is the business of every human being across the globe. I must emphasis on two words here; execution and human beings.

Human life is an evolutionary process and is not up to anyone to give or take it. They take away lives in Iran by claiming that it is within their laws. But the human civilization and modern world do not regard it as laws. Therefore it is the right of every human being, including Mr. Pompeo, to protest against this execution.

Sadigh Yazdchi:

What they call “the laws” in Iran are not laws at all. They are a collection of religious rules by a regime that claims have been given to them from the hereafter world in the name of Islamic Sharia. They use these criteria to kill people because they have no realistic view of the creation and what life means. They use the same mentality to imprison and torture people and finally execute them.

Allahyar Kangarlou:

The downfall of the regime will not lead to Iran becoming a “second Syria”. On the contrary the continuation of this regime will turn the entire Middle East into a real and larger Syria.

Those who advocate this scenario just use it to deceive our people and frighten them from resorting to a popular movement to overthrow this regime.

Sadigh Yazdchi:

The Islamic republic has since its inception tried to rule over the Islamic world and the only thing that it does not care about is the destruction of Iran in the way of achieving its lunatic ideas.

Jamshid Chalangi:

Could a republic or a democratic monarchy bring about peace and prosperity for the Iranians?

Allahyar Kangarlou:

They both are better alternatives than this religious dictatorship that calls itself a republic.

Sadigh Yazdchi:

I think at this stage the question is not which one of these two alternatives are better. This should be left to the decision of the Iranian people after this current regime is removed.

However, monarchy has always been associated with the religious establishment and we are after a democratic system of government that can only be realized through a secular republic.

Allahyar Kangarlou:

If we are to listen to the Iranian people to realize their aspirations, then in their recent mass protests against the regime they have been shouting slogans in support of a democratic monarchy.

The Iranians have bitter memory of a republican system of government of all colors and I think a secular and democratic monarchical system is the best option for them when they are free to choose what they want.
