Behind the Headlines/June 15, 2018

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines we will review the latest news of Iran with a focus on the country’s economic situation.

The Iranian regime says it is to offer a general pardon for its opponents. However, the question is who should pardon whom, considering that most of the regime’s leadership and senior official shave been involved in the political murders of thousands of Iranians.

We will also look at the latest developments of the US-North Korea summit.

Our guests tonight are Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh and Mehdi Khazali.

We will first watch a video clip in which Iran’s Minister of Economy, Mr. Karbaschian, has claimed that the Iranian people should be content with whatever they have on their dinner table.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

Mr Karbaschian speaks as if he is dreaming. The Rouhani government is not reformable and Rouhani simply parrots whatever Khamenei has said. These kinds of talks do not solve the people’s problems and the reality is that the country’s economic system has collapsed and the monies that the regime has squandered for decades will never return into our people’s pockets. Mr Karbaschian lives on the ninth cloud.

Mehdi Khazali:

The economy minster is talking about himself and his own household. Just look at the value of our national currency to find out about the depth of Iran’s economic problems.

The government has officially set the value of one dollar to 4200 tomans. But in the coming days it will rise to 17000 tomans against one dollar and no one can do anything about it.

Here we are talking about the regime’s adventurist policies in the region and the consequences of the international sanctions. Its policies have nothing to do with Islam or Shias as Islamic revolution has done immense damage to Islam and Shias.

North Korea that has long been the ideal model of regime for the Iranian hardliners has finally concluded that the real war is fought in the economic fields.

While the world is moving towards clean energy Iranian regime has been wasting billions of dollars on nuclear energy and now it has proved a futile project and we have to surrender to avoid a war.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

In the 1960s we had the rise of Arab nationalism and Nasser and Palestinian issue as its symbols.

The Iranian regime has been spending billions of dollars to spread its vile ideology across the globe and ridiculously claims this would lead to the appearance of the missing Imam.

The regime just abuses religion for its adventurist and destructive policies and must be brought to justice for the chaos that it has caused among the Muslim countries.

The US still does not have a specific policy towards the regime as yet. Mike Pompeo wants to apply further pressure on it to gain concessions from it but then it will no longer be a regime as we know it.

Others led by John Bolton believe the regime will never change and along with putting pressure on it the US should support the Iranian people to overthrow it and if this fails a military option should be considered.

A third view supports the idea of the armed forces taking over the power in Iran and the country being led by a military figure for a period before it could evolve into a secular democracy like what happened in Ghana.

Some suggest that after the midterm elections in US if the Republicans have the upper hand, the process of removing the Islamic republic regime will start.
