Jamshid Chalangi:
In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines we will discuss the historic meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un and look at its repercussions for the Iranian regime, in light of the US exit from the nuclear deal.
Our guests tonight to discuss these issues are Behzad Mehrani and Dr. Hassan Nayeb Hashem.
Jamshid Chalangi:
What is the significance of this meeting?
Behzad Mehrani:
Regardless of if there will be a comprehensive agreement between the two countries, given the circumstances that have led to the meeting makes it a historic event. Some compare it with the meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev.
The most significant development is that the North Korean leadership has agreed to complete denuclearization in return for guarantee that the US will not seek to destabilize it.
Dr. Hassan Nayeb Hashem:
Undoubtedly this has been an historic meeting but it is even more significant how it will progress. Is it going to be another Libyan situation or the US will establish a new relationship with North Korea similar to the ones with East Asian countries and China?
The comparison with Reagan and Gorbachev meeting is not correct as then there were a massive array of nuclear bombs of the two sides facing each other but North Korea does not have that many bombs.
This looks more like the Iran situation where the regime has been following the North Korean model of arming itself with nuclear technology and that is precisely why the Islamic republic regime is concerned about this meeting.
Behzad Mehrani:
Regimes like the Islamic republic in Iran, which is not the representative of Iran and represses its own people and opponents fit into this North Koran category. When these regimes want to have relationship with the international community they always need to receive a guarantee from major power that they will not remove them from power.
Khamenei has clearly asked for such guarantee while there is every evidence that the country is on the verge of an uprising by the people, which would accelerate the regime’s collapse.
Dr. Hassan Nayeb Hashem:
Yes, I do agree that is true and the regime might even accept a referendum to save itself. The projection of its power in the region has backlashed and this regime is based on shaky foundations.
Behzad Mehrani:
When we look at the life of all dictators, their mentality has been similar. They will continue with their illusions to the last minute before their fall from power.
I doubt very much if the Iranian regime will ever accept the conditions put forward by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the same way as North Korean leadership has done.
