Behind the Headlines/July 10

Tonight we will look at why Iranian President Hassan Rouhani yesterday warned Britain of the “consequences” of its detention of an Iranian oil tanker off the coast of Gibraltar, in the context of the economic war that Washington is waging against Iran.

We will ask why the Iranian regime has taken the country to this point in which only the Iranian people are suffering and what exactly is going on inside the regime itself in terms of handling the current crisis.

US has now sanctioned two Lebanese members of parliament who have been associated with radical groups linked with Iran.

Also, we will find out the consequences of the publications of the open letter by 14 Iranian dissidents in which they have called for ayatollah Khamenei to resign and an overhaul of Iran’s Constitution so the country could peacefully go through a democratisation of its institutes.

Our guests tonight are Dr. Kamal Jafari from the city of Mashad, who is one of the signatories of the open letter, and Mr Shervan Pashandi who joins us from Toronto.

Dr. Kamal Jafari:

For many years we have done our best to reform this system of governance in Iran and direct them into the path of rationality with the least human and material costs to our nation, but sadly we have not achieved any positive result.

I was arrested and jailed and harassed last year and have now concluded that we must look into a future beyond the current system of governance for Iran through peaceful means in protecting the human values and security of our country, as well as our economy and national prestige.

By writing this open letter we are after creating a national unity in defence of our people’s civil rights and giving a direction as to how to look beyond this system of governance in the interest of the many future generations to come.

Shervan Pashandi:

The idea of looking beyond the current system of governance in Iran is not an exclusivedemand of any opposition group or class of people as we now even have many decent and rational religious people who are unhappy about the current state of affairs in our country and are looking for change of direction.

They are concerned that their credibility and legitimacy among the population has been damaged by wrong policies.

Prince Reza Pahlavi and his wife and the members of Farshgard group have already statedtheir support for this open letter.
