Behind the Headlines/August 10

Jamshid Chalangi:

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines:

The latest news of Iran, including:

What would the new sanctions mean to Iran’s already crisis-ridden economy?

The foreign exchange market continues its rapid fluctuations as the US-Iran face-off continues.

And the latest human rights abuses in Iran.

Our guests tonight are Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh and Mohammad Nourizad.

We begin with playing the video clip of the burial service of Homa Soltani, the daughter of human rights lawyer Abdulfattah Soltani.

Mr. Nourizad, you attended this service. Can you share your feelings with us please?

Mohammad Nourizad:

There is this expression among the Iranians, which says, “climb the ladder and see for yourself”.

I once gave an interview to a satellite TV station after visiting the political prisoner Omid Kokabi in jail. In that interview I directed my words at Ali Khamenei and asked him to “climb the ladder in the middle of the hundreds of his close family members and admirers and see for himself if he could find one single person whose decency and moral values could match those of Omid Kokabi.

We can now say the same thing about Mr. Abdulfattah Soltani and I ask the entire Iranian justice system to climb a ladder and see if they could find one single man of integrity and honour among their judges and interrogators and be ashamed of themselves for jailing this lawyer for defending political activists. Not only political activists, but also for defending our fellow Iranian Baha’is and innocent students.

Iran’s justice system and the judiciary are the stooges of the Revolutionary Guard and its intelligence unit and only act upon their whims.

Unlike the Shah, these rulers of Iran are born killers and executioners. Every single one of them has been responsible for the deaths of tens of people. Even their so-called reformists have been involved in crime against humanity and theirhands are stained with the blood of thousands of innocent people.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

The fact that all factions of the regime have now reacted to the uprising of the Iranian people indicates that they have all been responsible for the horrific conditions that the country and nation finds themselves in.

We have had revolutions in Tunisia and even Iraq too but at most 30 people were killed. The rulers of the Islamic republic have taken matters to such an extreme that when the regime falls none of them will be spared from the wrath of the people.

They are ruthless people with no sense of humanity. Some of them have even ordered the execution of their own children only to prove their loyalty to the mostinhumane and barbaric of them all, the ayatollah Khomeini himself.

They neither have any religion nor honour. They are just a bunch of murderers who have taken over a country.

Khamenei is now counting on the illusion of the Democrats winning the mid-term elections in US and the likes of John Kerry come to power to save his regime from collapse.

He is resorting to every plot to stay in power but the late Shah never wanted to continue with his rule at the cost of seeing his fellow Iranians being killed and left the country.
