Jamshid Chalangi:
In tonight’s program we will look at the change of commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shortly after the US government has designated the force as a foreign terrorist organisation.
Meanwhile president Hassan Rouhani has said Iran is ready for negotiations with US but is not afraid of facing a military confrontation with it. What is the true message of the Iranian regime in these new developments?
Our guest tonight is journalist Amir Taheri who would share with us his analysis of these matters.
Amir Taheri:
There are certain political groups who support theIslamic republic regime for different reasons but pretend that they are an opposition force. They have expressed their opposition to the US decision to name the Guards as a terrorist group.
The fact of the matter remains that the Revolutionary Guards were established after the victory of the revolution and it did not evolve from a guerrilla army or a liberation army, like those in Algeria orChina.
Many young people from different classes joined it as a job and a means of earning money. It is a mishmash military group that has turned into an economic entity in the process and its command structure hasnever been or looked like a regular army and as a result there are different and opposing voices in the force who describe its mission in various ways.
However, they all follow the instructions of the supreme leader but have not been able to draw up a specific defence strategy for themselves.
The Guards have always been kept by the clerical regime as a balancing act against Iran’s national army as the mullahs fear and reject the regular army’s nationalistic sentiments.
In reality the Revolutionary Guards are a major problem for Iran and the Iranians as their economic and political influence and power hampers our country’s progress towards stability and peace.
