A Window to the Fatherland/Dr. Nourizadeh/May 14

We begin tonight’s edition of A Window to the Fatherland with Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh reading one of his poems from the book of his collected works.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

In tonight’s program we talk to the prominent Iranian filmmaker and theatre director Parviz Kardan.

Parviz Kardan:

With my warm greetings to you and your viewers. You mentioned the good old days that we used to work in Iran’s film and theatre industries.

I also remember the play Waiting for Godot. In those days this was interpreted by the artistic communities of Iran ,as if someone was coming to bring democracy and happiness for Iran and many people thought that this person was Khomeini.

Some people even compared him with Gandhi. But what a Gandhi he turned out to be!!

I must thank you for your poetry as poetry has a major part in our culture and social life. I was watching pictures of how Iranians have been celebrating Nowruz at the tomb of Cyrus the Great and reading poems of Hafez there.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

I think that is a good sign that we the Iranians have once again found our own true roots. Before the revolution we were not fully aware of this important element of our culture. It sounds as if we have suddenly realised who we are.

First the Arabs invaded us, then the Turks came, later the Mongols ravaged our motherland and many other invaders came but our motherland has survived.

When the Islamic republic regime came it proved that has been the most anti-Iran regime in our history.

However, we then had the war with Iraq and our Kurds and Arabs fought against the Saddam’s army and showed their national unity. We are still one nation and will be the same in the future too.

Parviz Kardan:

You mentioned how we used to make TV serials in Iran. Iranians were into reading short stories in dailies and magazines and we thought that it would be nice to turn these stories into serials, which proved successful.

For me, the real Godot in our contemporary history has been Reza Shah.
