We begin tonight’s edition of A Window to the Fatherland with Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh reading one of his poems from the book of his collected works.
Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:
In tonight’s program we will talk to Dr. Houshang Amir-Ahmadi who would share with us his experiences of trying to end the Iran-US tensions for many years to no avail.
Houshang Amir-Ahmadi:
I was talking to a close friend of mine recently who happens to be a top official within the Islamic republic and he jokingly said that I am the only person who is calling for the end of the regime but still respected by it, because allthese years I have been trying to bring these guys to their senses without succeeding!
However, the fact of the matter remains that this regime has not learnt anything from its past 40 years of rule and still acts irrationally towards the realities of the world we live in.
I was not in Iran at the time of the revolutions and was a supporter of the opposition leader the late Dr. Bakhtiar.
I went back to Iran seven years later and helped our soldiers in the war fronts and the reconstruction works that followed. Later I moved to the US and set up an organization with the aim of mending the broken relations between Iran and America.
This was at the same time that Khatami had been elected as the president and we were trying to establish a civil society for Iran.
We had managed to convince the Clinton administration to apologize for the US role in overthrowing the Mossadeq government and Mrs. Albright officially announced this in a UN gathering where Khatami was also present.
But I can firmly tell that the so-called reformists in Iran were the main opponents of the re-establishment of relations with US because they always want to use this matter as a means of creeping into power.
The conservatives have their own reasons for opposing US but it is the reformists who are the main obstacle to Iran and US becoming two partners again.
All in all we are dealing with a regime in Iran that is run by irrational people who always make wrong decisions for the country and its people.
