We begin tonight’s edition of A Window to the Fatherland with Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh reading one of his poems from the book of his collected works.
Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:
Today is the birthday of Jesus Christ, the prophet of love and life.
This morning we had the news of the cleric Seyed Mahmoud Shahroudi being seriously ill and this is the same cleric who until a few months ago was roaming Iran’s religious cities with his bodyguards and wives and rumor had it that he would succeed Khamenei.
He was born in 1948 in the Iraqi city of Najaf and attended classes held by ayatollah Khomeini who was then living in exile in Iraq.
Shahroudi went to Iran after the Islamic Revolution to serve as an intermediary between Khomeini and Iraqi leaders.
He served as the head of Iran’s Judiciary for 10 years and took the helm of the Expediency Council in 2017.
I once told Khamenei how he would allow an Iraqi citizen to head these powerful bodies in Iran and his answer was that because he can speak Farsi!
In his undeserved post as the head of judiciary many corrupt individuals rose to powerful positions within the regime and it was during Shahroudi time at the helm of the regime’s “justice system” that the savage crackdowns on Iran’s student movement happened.
He has passed away now and this must a be a reminder to the regime’s leaders that one day we all go and what matters is how the Iranian people will look and remember our legacy.
