We begin tonight’s edition of A Window to the Fatherland with Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh reading one of his poems from the book of his collected works.
Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:
In tonight’s program we speak to journalist and commentator Alireza Meyboudi about Iran’s latest socio-political issues. I am currently visiting US and it is a pleasure meeting my old friends every time I come over here.
Alireza Meyboudi:
We used to have many friends but were all separated as a result of the revolution.
The subject that these days is widely discussed on Iranian social media is that even if this regime is removed the lack of common progressive culture among the Iranians would still stop us from achieving democracy and a civil society.
I would say look at the Germans and Japanese how they became so civilized after the second world war during which they were regarded as fascists and brutal.
We will one day have to return to our own cultural values of peace and civility that run opposite to the “values” of the ruling regime in Iran.
Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:
Our generation grew up during the Vietnam War and we even cried for its victims but look at it now how the country has become a capitalist one and have close economic links with the US.
The same fate awaits the regime in Iran and thetalk of the country becoming another Syria is meaningless as we have so many cultural personalities who would help rebuild the country.
