Behind the Headlines/June 19

In tonight’s program we will look at the continued tension between Tehran and Washington as it has entered a new and dangerous phase after President Trump ordered the dispatch of 1000 more troops to the Middle East region and declared that the US would confront Iran’s interventions in the region and beyond it.

As the Islamic republic regime continues to impose its rule over Iran, we find out how the Iranian people have lost so many of their socio-economic benefits and rights under this regime.

Also, in recent days 14 Iranian political activists have published an open letter in which they have called for the resignation of Khamenei as the first step to save our country from any further calamities.

In their letter they say that the main obstacle to achieving peace and prosperity for Iran and its people is the absolute rule of the supreme leader ayatollah Khamenei who is not accountable to anyone and has abused the Constitution for his personal powers.

Tonight we speak to two of the signatories of this open letter Misters Mohammad Hossein Sepehri and Hashem Khastar by asking them how they have come to their conclusions by demanding the change of the Constitution and resignation of Khamenei?

Mohammad Hossein Sepehri:

About two months ago we came up with the idea of writing this open letter and invited other friends to join them and do something urgently to save our motherland of Iran.

We discussed how the current regime does not allow us to do this task and what are the real obstacles to achieve this objective.

At the end we all decided that only two demands of a fundamental change in our Constitution and at the same time the resignation of the Rahbar (Khamenei) can help achieve this aim.

The Constitution of this regime stipulates that the Islamic revolution must be “exported” to other Muslim countries and as such it allows interference in other nations’ business. Khamenei has said that in Iran everyone is free to speak their mind and express their opinion without being persecuted but they are lying as I have been summoned to the court of Khorasan for asking for democracy and human rights in Iran and have been suspended from my job for six months for just demanding that our Constitution must change to curb the supreme leader’s limitless powers.
