Behind the Headlines/september 26

Jamshid Chalangi:

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines:

What went on about Iran at the UN gathering?

What did Hassan Rouhani say in his speech at the UN and how did the US officials respond to his comments?

What real role does the Iranian regime play in international terrorism?

What new policy will US adopt towards Iran after this year’s UN gathering?

What more economic problems the Iranian people expect from the new sanctions?

Our guests tonight to discuss these topics are Allhyar Kangarlou, Borzoo Mehr-Tolouie and Afshin Nariman.

Afshin Nariman:

I attended a fridge meeting in which important people including the Saudi Foreign Minister, the head of Israel’s Mossad and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke about Iran and the regime’s policies.

They all distinguished between the Iranian people and the Islamic republic’s leaders in their speeches and acknowledged that the Iranians are victims of the regime’s nefarious policies at home and abroad.

Outside the UN building there was a protest demonstration against the regime and Rouhani’s presence at the UN and despite the heavy rain the demonstrators from various Iranian opposition groups kept their action going.

It is interesting that in his UN speech of last year President Trump targeted North Korea, Syria and Iran but this year he only mentioned Iran again and criticised the regime’s leadership.

For his part, Rouhani began his speech by defending his own government and referred to the approval of the Guardian Council as the source that has given legitimacy to his government, which means the Iranian people are not the source of the legitimacy of his government.

Allhyar Kangarlou:

Surely the democratic governments always defend the national interests of their own people and Mr. Trump has been elected to do the same job for the American people, not the Iranian people.

Sadly the only country in the world whose leaders have no concern about the national interests of their people is our country of Iran.

From the speeches that we have heard from US officials at this year’s UN gathering it is quite clear that Washington has decided to solve the “Iran problem” once for all and Trump very clearly stated that aim in his speech and reminded the world that he is very serious about this as well and if the Russians, Chinese or Europeans want to undermine his policy towards Iran, then they will be facing the US reaction for it.

Borzoo Mehr-Tolouie:

I believe the US government has taken a very clear policy towards Iran in which it distinguishes between the Iranian people and their rulers.

While Trump spoke about Iran from a position of strength, Rouhani’s speech was quite the opposite and he sounded like a loser and just huffed and puffed about peace and security, which given the regime’s policies at home and abroad nobody believed him.
