Behind the Headlines/september 5

In tonight’s program of Behind the Headlines:

The free fall in the value of Iranian rial continues;

The reasons for jobless problem in Iran, according to officials;

Mehdi Karoubi’s latest open letter;

John Kerry’s memoirs are published;

And Bashar Assad calls for peace.

Our guest tonight to discuss these topics with him is, the Washington-based human rights activist Behzad Mehrani.

Jamshid Chalangi: The free fall of Iran’s national currency is continuing on daily basis and no one accepts any responsibility for it within the Islamic republic regime. Who is then supposed to look after the interests of Iranian people?

Behzad Mehrani:

I think there are many factors involved for this free fall in the value of Iranian rial but there is one main reason for it.

We never had such massive monetary problems in Iran before the Islamic revolution and were always in harmony with the rest of the world in terms of foreign exchange rates and the value of our currency.

However, with the arrival of the Islamic republic regime and its adventurist and destructive foreign policy and the reaction of the international community to it, the foundations for Iranian people’s current problems were laid.

If you could imaging that in your local community that you live you begin to insult your neighbors and harass them round the clock and try to force them to behave to your liking and believe in your own “values”, then this is what the Iranian regime has been doing to our country’s neighbors since its inception.

Naturally the result is that all these neighboring countries have become adversaries to the regime, but the destructive consequences are aimed at our people.

Jamshid Chalangi: The regime claims that the Iranian people have chosen to live with these woes and appalling conditions to be independent of foreign powers, namely the US.

Behzad Mehrani:

Javad Zarif has made such comment during a television interview. But the Iranian people on more than one occasion have expressed their deep regret for the Islamic revolution and in fact even since the day after that event have been struggling to uphold their previous life style and aspirations and culture, which run opposite to what the regime prescribes for them.

Our students, intellectuals, women, workers, farmers have all been telling thisregime through their protests and uprisings that they do not want this regime because it has brought nothing but miseries and calamites for our nation.

The other day the MP Mrs. Salahshouri confessed to this demand of our people but asked Khamenei to intervene and allow a referendum on the management of the national broadcasting organization and the vetting system for parliamentary and presidential elections.

The Iranian people are telling this regime that we want a referendum to oust the entire religious establishment but this MP is trying to divert their struggle to make the regime survive.

Lest we forget that the founder of this regime, Khomeini, had ordered his followers that the continuation of the Islamic republic, not Iran, must always be their priority.
